ENGINEERING DRAWING FOR MANUFACTURE

By Brian Griffiths, Reader in the Department of Systems Engineering at Brunel University, UK

Description
The processes of manufacture and assembly are based on the communication of engineering information via drawing. These drawings follow rules laid down in national and international standards. The organisation responsible for the international rules is the International Standards Organisation (ISO). There are hundreds of ISO standards on engineering drawing because drawing is very complicated and accurate transfer of information must be guaranteed. The information contained in an engineering drawing is a legal specification, which contractor and sub-contractor agree to in a binding contract. The ISO standards are designed to be independent of any one language and thus much symbology is used to overcome any reliance on any language. Companies can only operate efficiently if they can guarantee the correct transmission of engineering design information for manufacturing and assembly. This book is a short introduction to the subject of engineering drawing for manufacture. It should be noted that standards are updated on a 5-year rolling programme and therefore students of engineering drawing need to be aware of the latest standards. This book is unique in that it introduces the subject of engineering drawing in the context of standards.

THE COMPLETE PROJECT MANAGEMENT OFFICE HANDBOOK

THE COMPLETE PROJECT MANAGEMENT OFFICE HANDBOOK,
Gerard M. Hill - Principal, Hill Consulting Group, Woodbridge, Virginia, USA

The Complete Project Management Office Handbook, Second Edition identifies the PMO as the essential business integrator of the people, processes, and tools that manage or influence project performance. This book details how the PMO applies professional project management practices and successfully integrates business interests with project goals— regardless of whether the scope of the PMO is limited to managing a handful of specific projects or expanded to oversee the total practice of project management within the organization.

The book first considers the five stages of PMO capability, each benchmarking a particular level of capability achieved if functions are fully implemented. Each stage is also indicative of the organization’s maturity in project management, with the PMO’s role and responsibilities advancing from project management oversight and control at the lower end of the competency continuum to strategic business alignment at the higher competency stages.

This revised edition then examines 20 function models that can be used to guide the organization through the deliberation and the development of PMO operational capability. These models suggest what project management capability can be realized through comprehensive implementation of each PMO function.

Providing project and business managers with a starting point that enables them to achieve desired results from project management, The Complete Project Management Office Handbook is an important resource for everyone involved in making project management work effectively within the organization.

Applied Materials Science

Applied Materials Science: Applications of Engineering Materials in Structural, Electronics, Thermal, and Other Industries
Deborah D. L. Chung State University of New York, Buffalo, USA

Materials are the foundation of technology. As such, most universities provide engineering undergraduates with the fundamental concepts of materials science, including crystal structures, imperfections, phase diagrams, materials processing, and materials properties. Few, however, offer the practical, applications-oriented background that their students need to succeed in industry.

Applied Materials Science: Applications of Engineering Materials in Structural, Electronics, Thermal, and Other Industries fills that gap. From a cross-disciplinary perspective that reflects both the multifunctionality of many materials and the wide scope industrial needs, the author examines the practical applications of metal, ceramic, polymer, cement, carbon, and composite materials across a broad range of industries. The topics addressed include electronic packaging, smart materials, thermal management, nondestructive evaluation, and materials development. The text is clear, coherent, and tutorial in style, includes numerous up-to-date references, and provides background material in a series of appendices.

Unique in its breadth of coverage of both materials and their applications, Applied Materials Science is both scientifically rich and technologically relevant. If you work or teach those that aspire to work in an engineering capacity, you will find no text or reference that better prepares its readers for real-world applications of engineering materials.

Corrosion Control Through Organic Coatings

Corrosion Control Through Organic Coatings

Choosing the most suitable coatings for structures such as bridges and building supports can extend the service life of that structure significantly. Corrosion Control Through Organic Coatings discusses the most important variables in the testing, selection, and application of heavy-duty, organic corrosion-protection paints. The book addresses the maintenance and restoration of older infrastructure and industrial plant as well as coatings for new structures made from various types of steel.

The author, Amy Forsgren, examines the mechanisms of aging and deterioration caused by ultraviolet light, condensation, temperature, and chemical reactions. She also provides a complete description of composition of anti-corrosive organic coatings, including pigments, binders, and additives. Ms. Forsgren suggests which corrosion tests provide the most useful information on coating performance and corrosion-protection. Several chapters review the advantages and disadvantages of of different surface preparation methods. In addition, the author considers the environmental impact of various coatings and recognizes health hazards posed by volatile organic compounds (VOC's), toxic or hazardous pigments such as lead, and silica dust exposure. She also offers recommendations for providing safe working environments for personnel handling surface preparation.

Integrating engineering aspects and corrosion expertise with paint formulation knowledge and surface chemistry, Corrosion Control Through Organic Coatings provides unique coverage of the most advanced treatments for extending the life span of heavy-duty metal structures today.
